Purpose of the role

The Sales Manager - Retail will be responsible for identifying, developing, and securing new retail business opportunities across Europe. The role directly contributes to the growth of Shift4's presence in the European retail payments ecosystem by expanding client partnerships, driving sales performance, and positioning Shift4 as a trusted advisor delivering tailored, innovative payment solutions.

This role oversees the full sales cycle (from lead generation to onboarding) and will gradually build and manage a sales team aligned with business needs. The position plays a crucial role in transforming the European retail payments landscape and strengthening long-term commercial relationships in the retail sector.

Responsibilities
  • Identify, pursue, and close new retail business opportunities across Europe.
  • Take full ownership of the sales cycle: lead generation, pitching, contract negotiation, onboarding, and client delivery.
  • Build and manage a team of field sales agents as the business grows.
  • Consistently achieve and exceed personal and team sales targets.
  • Deliver compelling presentations and tailored proposals to retail clients of all sizes, from SMBs to complex, multi-location enterprises.
  • Maintain deep market knowledge of retail trends and payment innovations to strengthen Shift4's positioning.
  • Collaborate with global and regional teams (marketing, product, operations, finance) to ensure seamless processes and excellent service delivery.
  • Accurately manage CRM pipeline reporting and adhere to internal sales processes.
  • Represent Shift4 at industry events, trade shows, and on client site visits across country/region of responsibility.
  • Act as a trusted advisor to prospective retail clients, helping them identify optimal payment solutions and supporting long-term business growth.

  • CRM proficiency and strong organizational skills.
  • Languages: Fluent English (mandatory). Native or proficient knowledge of the local language is required depending on the country of assignment (Italy, France, Spain, Germany, or Portugal). Knowledge of additional European languages beyond the local language is considered a plus.
  • Willingness and ability to travel frequently across Europe.
Qualifications and education requirements
  • Minimum 5+ years of experience in sales leadership and business development within payments/fintech and retail technology industries.
  • Demonstrated track record of success in driving sales performance, managing complex deals, and nurturing client relationships across diverse merchant sizes.
  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Economics, Finance, or related field.
  • Extensive experience in leading sales in international, competitive environments; proven ability to deliver revenue growth, build teams, and position solutions strategically.
